A Great MobileMe Gallery Alternative is ZangZing

By Kathryn 96 days ago

Looking for a MobileMe Gallery Alternative?

MobileMe Alternative

As many folks have heard, Apple is shutting down MobileMe and MobileMe Gallery will not be available in iCloud. And we know that there are millions of people who need to find a MobileMe alternative before next year.

Well, we’re here to help! We’ve added a MobileMe Gallery connector  this week so that you can move your photos from MobileMe to ZangZing quickly and easily.

ZangZing as a MobileMe Alternative

As you can imagine we’re pretty proud of what we’re doing at ZangZing to make photo sharing easy, fun, beautiful and as public or as private as you’d like.  And we think there are some things that make ZangZing a great MobileMe alternative.

  • It’s free! (we’ll have a premium service soon while still offering some free storage)
  • Familiar and simple metaphor of albums as MobileMe galleries
  • Desktop photo uploader that lets you add photos directly from iPhoto
  • Public, Hidden and Invite only privacy settings soyou decide who can view your albums
  • Group photo sharing which lets other people add photos to your album
  • Steaming albums which let your group know when someone  adds new photos
  • Friends can share comments on the photos
  • Follow your friends and find out whenever they create new albums
  • And much more…

Moving a MobileMe Gallery to ZangZing

New Album Button

To make ZangZing your MobileMe alternative is easy (and we have some things in the work to make it easier but more on that in the coming weeks…). (NOTE: We have since rolled out a batch Import for all your MobileMe Galleries which is even easier than what we describe below)  Here are the simple steps to get started…

  1. Create a free account on ZangZing and click the green New Album button on your homepage to create a new album.

  1. On the Add Photos screen scroll to the MobileMe folder.  Click on the MobileMe folder and connect your MobileMe account.

Mobile Me Alternative Adding Photos

  1. Once you connect your account you will see all your MobileMe galleries. Click once to open a gallery and click once to Add All Photos (be careful not to click twice otherwise we will add them twice!) from that gallery or select individual photos to add from MobileMe to ZangZing.
Add All Photos
  1. Once you have added the photos, you can click next to name your album, set the privacy settings of your album and share it. And voila!  Your first step for a MobileMe replacement.

Of course, this is just the basics of downloading a MobileMe gallery and making ZangZing your MobileMe alternative.  If you are new and would like to learn more, you might want to read Getting Started with ZangZing. This will help to make the transition to ZangZing as your MobileMe replacement a little easier.

We hope you see ZangZing as a great MobileMe alternative. If you’re new to ZangZing you can  join for free or sign in.

It’s on our to do list and we hope to get to this sometime early next year. Thanks.

This sounds great! Will you be able to store videos as well? I would gladly pay for a service for that.

  • Anonymous

Yes, we are planning to support video. Probably first support bringing over video from MobileMe and then support adding new ones… You should try ZangZing out and click Import All to bring all your photos over.  It’s free to try so no risk… You can read more about Import All at http://www.zangzing.com/blog/import-photos/

Just discovered this beautiful little gem you have created here. Nice Work! I’ll be spreading the word about this for you to everyone I know looking for the Mobile Me alternative. It’s really looking good. Can’t wait to see all the features you’ll be adding. Keep up the great work!

    Cheers,
    Steaphan

  • Sdjnyc

Do you have an app for the ipad available similar to the mobile me gallery app?

  • Bob LeBailly

Glad to hear that there are plans to support video. I am very happy with ZangZing other than not supporting video. I was considering moving my MobileMe Gallery videos to YouTube, but now I’ll hold off until we approach June 30, 2012 when MobileMe shuts down. I hope that ZangZing implements video before then.

Indeed great alternative to Mobile Me Gallery. Imported 40 or so albums without a hitch. Well done. Keep on the good work.

    +1 on native Aperture upload

Thank you so much for the compliment!  And, giving users an easy way to upload from Aperture is on our to-do list.

Thank you so much for the compliments, Steaphan!

Thanks.  We are diligently working on an iPhone app first.  Of course, iPad is high on the list.

    Looking for this as well!

Thanks for letting us know Eric.  We appreciate the feedback.

This is a fantastic alternative to Mobile Me. Thank you for making it so easy! Is there a way to see how many photos are in each album we create on Zang Zing?

  • Anonymous

Mary – thanks and glad it worked so well!  Right now we don’t have an indicator for the count of photos in an album but it’s on our list.

  • AB

I too would like to have a count of photos indicator.  Happy to hear it’s on your list.
Just hooked up with you all and so far so good.

Love it, love it, love it. I am a MobileMe Gallery user and have tried other photo sharing sites in search of an alternative. Didn’t like any of them. And then there was you.

It was super easy to to learn and use. ZangZing is going to be HUGE. Keep up the great quality product and support and the market share will be yours.

Thanks so much. Yes, the photo indicator is on our list.  And, so happy that you are enjoying ZangZing.

Thank you so much for the compliment! It means so much to us to hear that. Back to work, and we hope that we can continue to impress you.

I still use mobile me gallery for many pro reasons, I love the option of allowing clients to be able to download full size images, the look of different viewing options and the image frame #s visible for clients to list selects. It really helps me expedite editors choices faster under deadlines, they get to see a large take which helps them streamline there selects.I also love that it was an immediate option in Aperture which I use for processing all my RAW files and organizing.
I am in desperate search for a replacement now that Apple has pulled the rug from under me. So?

  • JP

I couldn’t agree more. When will the video support happen? Zangzing is great, but I’m holding out until video support and an iphone app is released.

  • Anonymous

Thanks, JP.   We are planning to support video before June 30th. Hopefully, well before then.

As a MobileMe refugee, I joined ZangZing today and like it a lot so far. It’s great that it’s free, but I’m more than willing to pay for it if I decide to use it as my MobileMe replacement. I’ve been using SmugMug, but it’s way too complex, so I was very pleased to discover ZangZing.

I have my albums set to not let people download full res photos or purchase photos. I would also like the option of not letting anyone add photos, but you only have two choices: Everyone and Contributors. Please add “No one” to “can add photos.” Also, put another instance of the Edit and Add buttons toward the top of the page. When I’m editing multiple albums, it gets tiresome having to go all the way to the bottom left of the page to click Edit and then go back to the top to hit the Done and Back buttons. It would also be great to have an “Apply to all albums” button so I can make a change to all albums at once if necessary.

Thanks for a great product–I look forward to seeing the refinements in the coming months.

Thank you for your comment.  It is a bit confusing that we do not provide the option that “No One” can add photos. We’ll work on addressing this. Technically, if you set the Add Photos setting let only “Contributors” add photos, this means that no one can add photos to the album unless you specifically invite them as Contributors.

Thank you for the feedback on the location of the “Edit” and “Add” buttons.  That makes sense, particularly for those with larger screens.

And, we have it on our list of to dos to enable different ways of bulk editing, so your suggestion of having a button to “apply to all albums” is good.

    Thanks again for the comments.
